What is your foundation?

Good afternoon, friends and family!

What an incredible weekend we had. It was so encouraging to see the pure joy on someone’s face because of their new pet, and then to hear another person’s powerful testimony about a work breakthrough after almost four months of standing in faith. God’s goodness really never stops.

Yesterday in church—especially during worship—I heard the Holy Spirit speak to me very clearly: “What is your foundation?”

In God’s Kingdom and in His Word, I’ve learned that there are often hidden truths and fresh revelations waiting to be discovered.

That led me to this verse:

Isaiah 28:16 (NIV) “So this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ‘See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic.’”

This scripture is a prophetic promise pointing straight to Jesus. It’s a very important one because the whole church – us, God’s children—is built on this cornerstone, this foundation.

Just like the material, the strength and the quality of a building’s foundation determine whether it will stand strong and last through storms…in the same way, the character of Jesus is the solid, reliable “substance” of the spiritual foundation He gives us.

A weak physical foundation – poor concrete, bad reinforcement, or not dug deep enough – will crack or shift under pressure, no matter how beautiful the building looks on top. In exactly the same way, if our faith rests on anything less than the unchanging character of Christ, it will waver when trials, temptations, doubts or tough moral choices come.

Jesus is not just a fallback if things don't work out or a place to run to when life gets tough. His perfect character is the dependable, enduring material that holds everything together. The Bible calls us to follow His example (1 Corinthians 11:1; Ephesians 5:1-2), to shape our lives according to His pattern so our faith stays steady. When we grow in those traits, we strengthen the foundation of our own lives and of the church as a whole.

So the question the Holy Spirit put in my heart was: “What is your foundation?” What do you lean on when you need strength? What keeps you going when things get really hard? What are you actually building your faith on?

It’s so easy to slip into relying on • our jobs • contracts • businesses • relationships • even good things like running or exercise

…to give us that feeling of solid, secure living. But those things only give a false sense of security—because God’s Word is very clear:

1 Corinthians 3:10-11 (NIV) “By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

Paul makes it very plain: Jesus Christ is the one essential, irreplaceable foundation.

And then we read:

Ephesians 2:19-20 (NIV) “Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.”

So how does this play out practically for you and me in everyday life? How do we actually apply this day-to-day?

  1. We have to spend regular, real time in God’s Word
  2. We have to build a living relationship with God so we can hear the Holy Spirit
  3. We have to follow His instructions and guidance in the big things and the everyday things

When panic, anxiety, and uncertainty come, our automatic fallback should be the cornerstone… the unshakable foundation of Jesus.

When difficult circumstances arrive—health problems, financial pressure, setbacks, even devastation—we take those circumstances and we put them next to the foundation of our lives…and suddenly they look very, very small in comparison.

There is nothing lacking in the full, completed price Jesus paid. After that price was paid, and after we surrendered our lives to Him. We can boldly declare:

“JESUS—YOU are my foundation! YOU are my cornerstone! I will NOT be shaken! I will be victorious because of WHO YOU are in my life!”

Our live's depend on having a foundation, called Jesus.

When you really believe it…that settles it.

God bless you all

Carl

PS: A cornerstone (foundation stone or setting stone) is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. All other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure.
